If you operate in South Carolina, take note—there are two important updates from the SCDMV and FMCSA that could affect your day-to-day operations.

SCDMV Motor Carrier Services Are Moving

As of July 3, 2025, the South Carolina DMV will no longer offer customer service for motor carriers at its Blythewood headquarters. That location is staying open as the main office, but all in-person Motor Carrier services are moving to the Columbia-O’Neil branch.

If you’ve been stopping by Blythewood for paperwork or service, be sure to adjust your plans and head to the O’Neil branch instead after July 3.

FMCSA to Require Electronic Medical Certificates Starting June 23

A nationwide rule from the FMCSA is also about to take effect, and it changes how medical certificate information is handled.

Beginning June 23, 2025, paper medical certificates will no longer be accepted by the SCDMV—or any other state DMV. Instead, all new certificates must be submitted electronically through the FMCSA’s system.

Here’s the quick breakdown:

  • Certificates issued on or after June 23 must be submitted electronically.
  • Paper certificates dated before June 23 will still be valid until they expire.
  • Medical examiners must be registered with the FMCSA’s National Registry to upload medical information. You can check or confirm your examiner’s registration here.

These changes are meant to simplify tracking and reduce paperwork, but they do require action ahead of time. Make sure your provider is set up for electronic submission so your certification stays current and your authority stays active.
